Mali Hotel
Mali Hotel: A Boutique Hotel on the Banks of the Niger River in Bamako
Designed as a boutique hotel in Bamako, Mali Hotel is a hospitality building located in the center of Mali’s capital, on a strategic site close to the Niger River. Placing the natural potential of the riverfront at the heart of its architectural decisions, the project aims to offer guests an experience that combines the fabric of the city with the calm of the river.
A Site Strategy Centered on River Views
The starting point of the design is to integrate views of the Niger River into every layer of the hotel program. Guest rooms, restaurant areas and shared spaces are oriented towards the river. This orientation is not just an aesthetic choice; in Bamako’s hot climate, it is a functional decision that lets the prevailing winds from the river reach the interiors and supports natural ventilation. From their rooms or the restaurant, guests can watch the changing light on the river and the city’s lively skyline.
Indoor–Outdoor Continuity and Landscape Integration
On the ground floor, a seamless transition between interior and landscape was designed. The lobby, restaurant and social areas are directly connected to open-air terraces and gardens. Taking advantage of the tropical climate, this approach offers guests a stay that is not confined indoors but flows through the landscape. The open spaces are designed not just as decoration but as an active part of the hotel’s daily operation.
A Flexible Design Process with Two Alternatives
During the project, two different design alternatives were presented to the client. While both remain faithful to the same site conditions and river orientation, they take different approaches to massing, facade language and interior organization. This allowed the investor to choose the most suitable solution according to target market and budget priorities. The first alternative has a more compact, dense configuration, while the second adopts a more spread-out language interwoven with the landscape.
Details That Shape the Guest Experience
Throughout the design, the guest experience was the measure of every architectural decision. Room layouts maintain eye contact with the river while ensuring the privacy of private areas. The use of natural materials in shared spaces and details referencing the local fabric help give the hotel an identity specific to Bamako. The restaurant and lobby are designed to appeal both to hotel guests and to visitors from the city, so the hotel becomes not just a place to stay but a social space that engages with the city.
